Abdul Rahman Bin Mohammed Al Owais (1967) is the minister of Ministry of Health in the United Arab Emirates.

 

A graduate of the United Arab Emirates University, Al Owais attained a bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Information. He then became the Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development in 2006. Thereafter, Al Owais was appointed as Acting Minister of Health in 2011 and served until 2013.

 

In 2013, Al Owais was appointed as Minister of Health. In this capacity, he was later appointed by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to serve on the Independent High-level Commission on Non-Communicable Diseases from 2018 until 2019.

She is currently the Minister of Health – the Kingdom of Bahrain from 1st October 2015 to – present.

Before taking her current position as Minister, she was Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States (LAS) – Head of Social Affairs Sector (September 2012 – December 2014). She was in charge of supervising the Technical Secretariats of the Arab Ministerial Councils, namely, the Arab Social Affairs Ministerial Council, the Arab Health Ministerial Council, and the Arab Youth and Sports Ministerial Council. In addition to that, as Head of Social Affairs Sector, she was in charge of supervising 7 departments at LAS: Social Development and Policies Dept., Health and Humanitarian Aids Dept., Women, Family and Childhood Dept., Youth and Sport Dept., Education and Scientific Research Dept., Culture and Dialogue of Civilization Dept., Population Policies, Expatriates and Migration Dept., as well as the Social Filled Studies and Survey Unit. She also worked as Advisor to the Secretary-General of LAS as well as in charge of the Arab Economic and Social Council Secretariat (October 2008 – August 2012). She contributed during her work at LAS in collaboration and coordination with the UN Agencies in implementing several social and humanitarian aid programs and field visits to the Arab States. She holds a Master of Arts in Library and Information Studies – the University of London – UK (1991). She also holds several postgraduate diplomas include: International Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Planning and Management – UNESCO / International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP), Paris – France (2001), Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Management – University of Bahrain (1993), Postgraduate Diploma in Library and Information Studies – University of London (1989), Postgraduate Diploma in Education – University of London Institute of Education, UK (1983) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English Language and Literature – University of Baghdad (1976).

Oman

Dr. Ahmed Bin Mohammed Bin Obaid Al Saidi

His Excellency Dr. Ahmed Bin Mohammed Bin Obaid Al Saidi serves as the current Minister of Health of the Sultanate of Oman since 2010 and has been elected in 2020 as the First Vice-Chair of the Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO) during the 147th Session of the Executive Board. HE also presently holds the post of the Chairman of the Supreme Council of Arab Board for Medical Specialties since 2019.

Before this, HE held the post of Under Secretary for Health Affairs for two years (2008-2010). HE is also a Senior Consultant-Rheumatologist and has headed the Medical Division at The Royal Hospital, Oman before being appointed as the Deputy Director-General of the Royal Hospital.

HE has obtained several qualifications as follows: a BSc from Park College, Kansas City, the USA in 1984. Then, MB ChB, University of Glasgow, the UK in 1989. In addition to clinical diplomas, and specialty degrees; FRCP-Glasgow in 2003, FRCP-London in 2008, FFPH in 2012, and a General Management Degree from Harvard Business School USA in 2007.

Academically he has served as a Consultant Rheumatologist & Senior Lecturer, Bristol Royal Infirmary. Also, Clinical Fellow in Rheumatology, Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases (RNHRD) from UK., As well as, Clinical Research Fellow in Rheumatology, RNHRD.

HE believes that research is critical in healthcare and therefore endeavors in bridging the gaps in knowledge and developing health strategies; HE has participated in several clinical trials and has a significant number of international contributions.

Biography
Her Excellency Dr. Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari was appointed Minister of Public Health in January 2016.

Career

Her Excellency the Minister of Public Health worked as Managing Director of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) before being appointed Minister of Public Health. She joined HMC’s Women’s Hospital in 1996 and rose through the ranks to become Managing Director in 2007. Before that, Her Excellency the Minister of Public Health worked at the World Health Organization (WHO), Reuters, and as a freelance health reporter.

Education

Her Excellency the Minister of Public Health has a Ph.D. in Healthcare Management from Brunel University in the UK.

Responsibilities

  • Her Excellency the Minister of Public Health has overall responsibility for all Ministry of Health issues including:
  • Oversight of the quality and effectiveness of services delivered by public and private sector health service providers.
  • Oversight of public health service programs, including disease prevention, occupational health, food safety, environmental safety, and national immunization programs.
  • Preparation and development of Qatar’s National Health and Public Health Strategies and monitoring their progress.

  • He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from Kuwait University in 1985, the American Board of Pediatrics in 1989, from the American University of Miami, a fellowship in infectious diseases in 1992, and a fellowship in rheumatology from the University of Florida in 1992.

 

  • Consultant Pediatrician and faculty member at the College of Medicine at Kuwait University and has worked since 2020 as a member of the Ministry of Health’s Vaccine Committee.

 

  • He served as Head of the Pediatric Department at the College of Medicine, Head of the Pediatric Department at Mubarak Hospital, Chairman of the Board of Pediatric Departments, Head of the College of Pediatrics at Kuwait Institute for Medical Specialization, and Dean of Student Affairs at Kuwait University.

 

  • Recipient of the American Heart Association Award for Rheumatic Fever, the American Rheumatology Association Award and the Scientific Production Award from the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Science in Medicine.
